Who owns the car brands we all know?
You might drive a car from one of the brands we have at Dace Motor Company: like Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Skoda, Toyota… and many more. But did you ever stop and ask: who really owns that brand? You know, the big parent company behind the badge on the front. It’s a bit like finding out that your local coffee shop is part of a bigger chain. And in cars, this matters-because things like design, parts, servicing, and how many models are available depend on that parent company. So let’s look at the major players.
Volkswagen Group (VW Group)

The VW Group is a heavyweight. It’s the company that owns a lot of brands you’ll recognise. For example, VW itself, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, Cupra. If you pop into our Dace Motor Company showrooms in Stockport or Manchester, you’ll often see VW, Audi, Skoda, maybe even Cupra. They’re all under that big umbrella.
Here’s how I’d explain it: Imagine a big family owning a few different cafés-some fancy ones, some more everyday ones.
Same with VW Group: it has luxury labels (Bentley, Lamborghini), premium ones (Porsche, Audi) and more everyday ones (Volkswagen, Skoda). The benefit for you, the driver, is: being part of a large group means shared engineering, shared parts, often better reliability and servicing support. That’s one reason Dace Motor Company chooses to stock some of these brands. For example, Skoda is fully owned by VW Group. The VW Group’s size means it can spread the cost of development across many brands. So even a “value” car might benefit from technology used in the fancy ones. If you’re considering buying, say, a Skoda or an Audi from our Stockport showroom, knowing both are under VW Group can give extra confidence: parts availability, established servicing network, etc. So that’s VW Group in a nutshell: big, many brands, from everyday to ultra-luxury.
Stellantis N.V.

Another big one. Stellantis is a company formed when two big car companies merged: the old Peugeot-Citroën group (PSA) and Fiat Chrysler (FCA). Brands under Stellantis include: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, Vauxhall. If you look around Manchester and Stockport (where Dace Motor Company has showrooms), you’ll likely spot Vauxhall, Peugeot & Citroën quite often.
One thing to mention: Stellantis covers a wide range of brand types-from budget/mass market (like Fiat) to premium (Alfa Romeo) to American trucks (Ram Trucks). So it’s a very broad portfolio. If you’re after one of the brands we stock (like Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall) you’ll be in a brand that belongs to this large group. That means backing and resources, which often means better value and options. So if you’re browsing used cars at Dace for any of those brands, it’s worth knowing they sit in a big family that spans many markets.
BMW Group

This one is a bit simpler. BMW Group owns brands such as BMW itself, Mini, and Rolls-Royce. So if you see a Mini on our forecourt or a used BMW, it’s part of that group. The advantage: these brands share performance and engineering know-how.
From a buyer’s point of view: luxury and premium brands often cost more to maintain, but they also often hold their value. At Dace Motor Company we’ve got experience with many premium brands, and we know what to check (service history, parts availability). So when you see a brand like BMW or Mini, you’re dealing with a company that’s focused on premium motoring.
Toyota Motor Corporation (and others)

Toyota is also large and owns various brands: the main Toyota brand, Lexus (its luxury arm), Daihatsu, Hino (for commercial vehicles) among others. In the UK market, you’ll see Toyota and Lexus both fairly often.
If you visit our Dace Motor Company sites-Stockport or Manchester-they may have used Toyotas or Lexuses. Knowing the brand structure helps you assess what you’re buying. For example: Buying a Lexus means you’re buying a luxury sister brand of Toyota-so the reputation for reliability that Toyota has often extends to Lexus, just at a higher end.
There are other large groups too (for example, General Motors in the US) but in the UK-used-car market you’ll frequently come across brands owned by these big groups above.
Why this matters for you (and for a dealer like Dace)
So, why am I going on about brand ownership? Because when you’re looking for a used car (which we help with every day at Dace Motor Company, whether you’re in Stockport or Manchester), these details can give you an edge.
- Firstly: Parts and servicing. If a brand belongs to a large group, chances are there’s good parts supply, decent servicing support, maybe many trained technicians in the region. That means less worry down the line.
- Secondly: Value for money. Big groups can spread investment over many models, which helps them keep costs competitive. So you might find that a car from a larger “family” offers better value for money.
- Thirdly: Know what you’re getting. If you buy a brand you love, you’ll want to know whether it’s a standalone manufacturer or part of a big group. That affects resale, reliability, service history, etc.
At Dace Motor Company we’ve been in the used-car business around Manchester/Stockport for 25 years, so we see how brand-group matters in real life. We offer used cars from many of these brands (Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Cupra, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MG, MINI, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Suzuki, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo). We know which brands are backed by big groups and what that means for you. Also our “Price Promise” and the fact we do full HPI checks (so you know car history) means you can buy from us with extra confidence: if you find a like-for-like car at a main dealer, we’ll beat the price. So knowledge of brand ownership adds another layer of confidence.
Quick comparison: Which groups own lots of brands
Here’s a simple list so you get the picture.
- Volkswagen Group: Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, Cupra, Volkswagen.
- Stellantis: many brands including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, Jeep, Maserati.
- BMW Group: BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce.
- Toyota: Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu.
- And others (smaller scale) too.
When you walk into one of our sites (Dace Car Supermarket, Dace German Car Centre, etc) in the Greater Manchester/Stockport area, you’ll recognise many of these badges and now you’ll know whose ‘family’ they belong to.
What you should ask when buying a used car

Since you’re reading this because you might be thinking about buying a used car (or you just like cars-we’re happy either way!), here are a few questions you can ask to use this brand-ownership info to your advantage:
- Is the brand part of a large group or is it independent? This can affect parts availability.
- Does the parent company have a strong reputation? (e.g., Toyota / Lexus are well regarded for reliability)
- Are there many local dealers or service centres for that brand? Greater Manchester and Stockport are lucky to have quite a few.
- What’s the service history like? If the car shares parts with other brands in the same group, servicing might be easier or cheaper.
- When the car was built, under what group structure? Sometimes brands change groups or merge-so history matters.
At Dace Motor Company we make sure every used car we stock is HPI checked (so you get info like previous owners, mileage discrepancies, outstanding finance) and comes with our in-house warranty. So that means you can look at brand-group info with ease-the vehicle is already vetted from other angles.
