The Ultimate Used Car Maintenance Checklist

So, you've got yourself a used car. Nice one. Whether it's a zippy little hatchback or something chunkier like a 4x4, keeping it running sweet is the main goal, right? No one wants the faff of surprise breakdowns, weird noises from under the bonnet, or that sinking feeling when the MOT rolls around and your car’s not ready. Here at Dace Motor Company - with four showrooms across Stockport and Manchester - we've been selling used cars for over 25 years. We've seen it all. And we’ve helped thousands of people look after their cars so they last longer, cost less to run, and stay reliable. So, we thought, let’s share a proper, no-nonsense checklist that helps you keep on top of your used car without needing to be a mechanic.

First Things First: Get To Know Your Car

This might sound obvious, but loads of people don’t really spend much time getting to know their own car. They get the keys, drive it around, and wait for something to go wrong. Don’t be that person. Flip through the manual. Find out where stuff is - like your spare tyre, jack, fuse box, and dipstick (yep, that’s a real thing, and no, it's not an insult). If you’ve just bought a car from us at Dace, we’ll always walk you through the basics. We want you to feel confident driving away, not confused about what button does what.

Check Your Tyres, Don’t Just Kick Them

We’ve all seen someone give a tyre a little kick and nod like they know what they're doing. It doesn’t work. What you really need to do is check the pressure and tread regularly. Every few weeks, or before a long drive. Grab a pressure gauge or pop into a petrol station and check your tyre pressure. Your car manual will tell you what the pressure should be. And don’t forget the spare. That poor thing gets ignored until the worst moment. Also, keep an eye out for bald patches or cracks. If the tread looks flatter than a pancake, it’s time to change it. Don’t wait until you’re skidding through Stockport in the rain.

Oil – The Lifeblood of Your Engine

Right, let’s talk oil. It’s dead simple to check, but people skip it all the time. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, stick it back in, then check the level. If it's low, top it up with the right oil. Don’t just chuck in any old stuff. Check your oil every month or so. And if your car starts making weird ticking sounds, or the oil light flashes on, don’t ignore it. You don’t want to end up stranded on the M60 with a seized engine.

Lights On, Lights Off – Make Sure They Work

Every couple of weeks, check your lights. That includes headlights, brake lights, indicators, reverse lights, and fog lights. Grab a mate or just back up near a wall at night so you can see the reflections. It’s not just about seeing - it’s about being seen. And no one wants a £60 fine because their brake light’s gone out.

Wipers and Washer Fluid – Yes, It Matters

You might laugh, but dirty windscreens are a pain, especially with Manchester’s “classic” weather - all rain and road grime. Make sure your washer fluid’s topped up and your wipers aren’t shredded. If they leave streaks or make that horrible squeaky noise, replace them. They’re cheap and easy to sort.

Keep It Clean – Inside and Out

Now, we’re not saying your car needs to sparkle like it's in a showroom (unless you want it to), but keeping it clean does help. Salt from the roads in winter can mess with the paintwork. Bird droppings? Bad news for your paint if you leave it. Inside, just giving it a quick hoover now and then makes a difference. If you treat your car well, it feels better to drive. Plus, it’ll hold its value better if you ever decide to sell or trade it in with us at Dace.

Brakes – They Need To Work. Always.

If your brakes start squealing, grinding, or the pedal feels soft or spongy, get them checked. Straight away. Don’t wait. You should also keep an ear out for any changes in how they feel or sound. We’ve seen folks ignore dodgy brakes for way too long. You don’t want to be the person rolling through traffic lights outside the Trafford Centre because your brakes packed in.

Listen To Your Car – It Talks To You (Sort Of)

Your car tells you a lot, even without lights flashing on the dashboard. Rattles, knocks, shudders - they all mean something. If your car starts doing something weird, don't just turn up the radio. Trust your gut and get it looked at. We've had customers in our Manchester showroom say, “It’s probably nothing,” only for it to be a wheel bearing hanging on by a thread. Better safe than sorry.

Battery – No Juice, No Go

Modern batteries last a while, but cold mornings in Stockport can be brutal. If your car struggles to start, or the lights flicker when you turn the key, your battery might be on its way out. If you don’t drive much, a battery charger can help keep it topped up. And if it dies completely, well… we've all had that fun moment outside Tesco with a dead car and a frozen pizza melting in the boot.

Don’t Forget the Fluids

We’ve mentioned oil and washer fluid, but don’t forget the others: coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. They all matter. Low coolant means your engine could overheat. Low brake fluid? That one’s self-explanatory. And if steering feels heavy, that could be low power steering fluid. Pop the bonnet, have a look. If you’re not sure where things are, just ask - or drop by one of our Dace showrooms. We’ll happily point it all out without making you feel daft.

Watch Your Dashboard – Those Lights Mean Stuff

If a light pops up on your dashboard, don’t ignore it and hope it goes away. Yellow means “check it soon.” Red means “check it now.” Flashing? That’s code for “why are you still driving?” You’d be amazed how many people leave warning lights on for weeks. Then they’re surprised when something big goes wrong. Trust the lights. They’re trying to help you.

Service It – Even If Nothing’s Broken

This one’s huge. Just because your car feels fine doesn’t mean it doesn’t need a service. A regular service helps spot problems before they get expensive. Like changing your oil, checking filters, topping up fluids, and inspecting belts and brakes. At Dace Motor Company, we always recommend sticking to the service schedule. We’ll help you figure out when your next one’s due. If you’re not sure, pop in. No pressure, no hard sell. Just proper advice.

Keep Paperwork Handy

Service history, MOTs, receipts for any work you’ve had done - keep it all together. It’s dead handy if you ever need to check something or if you decide to trade your car in. And yes, it helps the value of your car if you’ve got a nice neat history to show. Buyers love that.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Skip MOT Time

You’d be shocked how many people forget their MOT. It sneaks up. Next thing you know, your car’s parked up and illegal to drive. Put it in your phone calendar. Set a reminder. If your car needs any work before the MOT, it’s better to know early so you’re not left rushing around. We’ve got in-house mechanics who can help with that too, so you’re not ringing around last-minute looking for a garage.

Just Keep On Top Of It

Look, owning a used car doesn’t have to be stressful. A bit of effort here and there goes a long way. And if you bought from Dace, you’ve already got a great start - all our cars are HPI checked, come with a 3-month warranty, and we’re always happy to help if anything crops up. We’re open seven days a week across Stockport and Manchester, so you can drop in anytime if you’ve got questions. Whether it’s something weird your car’s doing, or just making sure you’re up to date on your checks, we’re here. No fuss. Just decent advice and proper customer service - the way it should be. So yeah, keep this checklist handy. Maybe print it out. Stick it in your glovebox. And if in doubt, give us a shout.
